Other Bigfoot Information

An interesting website for Bigfoot Hunters here.

Here is a website that lists hoaxes (it classifies the Patterson-Gimlin film as a hoax as well)

Bigfoot / Sasquatch / Hairy Man

Ah, yes, the always popular Bigfoot.  What or who is Bigfoot?

There are many myths and legends about this one.  There are just as many, if not more, attempts at answering the mystery.  Is it the missing link -- an ape-like human that has been able to go mostly undetected for hundreds of years? Is it just a legend -- something to explain the unexplainable?  Or, is it some unclassified, undiscovered creature, a monstrous animal, just waiting and watching in our peripheral vision?

There are many sightings of the creature called by various names, including Bigfoot, Sasquatch, or the Hairy Man.  There have been sound recordings of Bigfoot screams and noises, as well as imprints of feet -- all found in the Sierra Nevada.

Still, there has never been scientific confirmation of the beast.  There has not been any sightings or recordings reliable enough to provide concrete evidence.  Nor have there been any fossilized or skeletal remains of something that could be classified as Bigfoot.

Bigfoot stories go back as long as the Sierra Nevada have been inhabited.

The Sierra Miwok Indians have a story about an ogre-ish creature named Yayali -- could he be Bigfoot?

There are also the renderings at Painted Rock of the Hairy Man -- a Bigfoot-like creature.

And of course, there's the famous Patterson-Gimlin film shot in 1967. Well, let's clearly understand that this was not shot in the Sierra Nevada, but rather further to the north and west in California's Six Rivers National Forest.  However, due to its proximity to the Sierra, if Bigfoot does exist, it seems a very plausible migration to stay within the state in various mountain ranges.

Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin shot the footage in 1967, certain that it would be instantly accepted as proof of existence of the Sasquatch. Unfortunately, the film was widely considered a hoax by the scientific community.  Others claimed that there was authenticity, but the overall sense was that this was a man in an ape suit rather than an ape-like creature.

When Patterson died in 1972, he continued to swear by the film's authenticity.  And Gimlin, who remained reclusive until recent years, also continues to claim that the film is authentic.

Various expeditions have been conducted to find proof of Bigfoot, but still, it remains a mystery.  A myth.  Bigfoot is one of the most famous and constant legends of the Sierra Nevada.
