Return to Table of Contents La Llorna (the Crying Woman) Cautionary myth or historical reality that has passed into legend? The basic story behind the myth is that of a crying woman, La Llorna, who killed her own children to be with the man she loved, who, in turn, rejected her. Having drowned her children, La Llorna, then did the same to herself. Variations of this tale have the man being the father of the lover, while others say that man is a forlorn, estranged or unrequited lover. The tale also threatens that La Llorna will kidnap lost or misbehaving children. A myth that has been around since the early days of Mexico, has filtered its way into the Sierra Nevada for well over 100 years. There are repeated sightings of La Llorna throughout the Sierra Nevada. Many people, firmly believe that La Llorna is more than a myth but a real woman, cursed to spend eternity searching for her children. Variations of this myth can be found here. |
