Mokelumne Hill (Moke Hill)

Mokelumne Hill, like many cities of the Sierra Nevada, was founded during the Gold Rush and found great prosperity during this time.

Mokelumne Hill was most likely named for a Miwok village that was once there.

Moke Hill is outside of Jackson, in Calaveras County and is incredibly difficult to find.  Even on many maps, the area did not otherwise seem to exist until Highway 49 forced it out of complete solitude.

At one time, this was one of California's richest towns and, at its peak, saw populations in excess of 15,000 people.  Today, it has fewer than 1,000 residents.

Much like many of the surrounding communities, when the gold disappeared, so did most of the people.

During its peak years, the town had a bawdy and violent reputation, averaging one murder per week.  This reputation has contributed to the legends and myths of Moke Hill for the last 150 years.

Moke Hill, by locals, is considered a ghost town, not because nobody lives there, but because it is believed to be a truly haunted area with regular sightings and multiple locations.

One of the longest standing areas of mystery is the Hotel Leger, with regular hauntings since the 1870s.  The hotel's famous "Room 7" is believed to be haunted by the hotel's namesake, George Leger (murdered in 1879), and apparitions regularly appear to hotel guests.  Other rumors of murder and mystery surround this hotel that even comes equipped with its own underground chamber that was once used to house prisoners.
