Preston Castle

After four years of construction, Preston Castle was completed in 1894.  Its grand construction and Romanesque architecture were a testament to the booming success of many of the Sierra Nevada communities because of the Gold Rush.

Located in Ione, California, Preston was conceived and built as a home for boys, to serve as a rehabilitation center.  It operated as such until 1960.

A historical landmark, the castle was in a state of decay after closing.  Only recently has it recently begun to find a new life through the Preston Castle Foundation.

Tours and overnight stays are now available in the castle, which has quickly become a destination for ghost hunters and photographers.

Preston has its share of stories, and supposedly its share of ghosts and spirits.

During its operation, 17 boys died at the school, most from diseases, such as tuberculosis.  One, however, was shot when trying to escape.

Additionally, there was the brutal murder of a housekeeper, bludgeoned to death.  Her murder remains unsolved and her ghost is said to make frequent appearances in the castle.

Preston, in its reformation efforts, would commonly punish boys with public lashings, isolation and starvation.
