Red Castle Inn

The Red Castle Inn, with its gothic design, claims that it was the first bed and breakfast in Nevada City, with its roots founded in the Gold Rush, back in the 1860s.  This inn has been preserved to maintain its original appearance, a California Historical Landmark, it is still in operation today.

The homepage of the Red Castle Inn doesn't make any reference to the mythology and folklore that has long surrounded this landmark.

The Red Castle Inn has its share of haunted tales. One of the most prominent, is that of Laura Jean, a nanny hired to look after the home's eleven children.  Laura Jean contracted a fever and died.

Inn owners believe that Laura Jean has never left the inn, believing its guests are the children who are supposed to be in her care.

There are reports of Laura Jean tucking guests in as they sleep, brushes her hand gently against their foreheads, and sits at the edge of their beds to ensure their safety. She believes she is in charge of the house. She moves things. She changes things. She opens and closes things.

Laura Jean has even crossed over and spoken through a psychic ...
