Wiley House (also called Aaron's House)

Originally built in the 1840s by early California pioneer, J. Alfred Birdwell, the house seemed to be cursed from the start.  Birdwell, not an original member of the Donner Party, but a member of the rescue and relief process.  He stayed behind after the second relief effort to aid those who could not be rescued. The elements proved too much -- Birdwell survived, but resorted to cannibalism and did not leave until he himself departed with the fourth and final relief effort.

Rumors of cannibalism overshadowed Birdwell's life. He was a successful businessman and California pioneer, but the whispers never stopped. Eventually, after accusations of a child's disappearance, his house was burned down. He was in the house.

The house was rebuilt by family members, and the small area of Verde Hills, saw ups and downs of prosperity.  But the Birdwell family and its heirs seemed to be cursed. There were multiple murders and other mysteries associated with the house.  It burned down several times, but was rebuilt each time, reportedly cursed, that if the house was ever destroyed, it must be rebuilt or it would release the curse on a much larger scale.

The house was eventually handed down to Veronica Wiley and her son Aaron. During that time, Veronica's abusive boyfriend, alleged beat and possibly molested Aaron. Eventually Aaron burned a portion of the house down with Marty Lipton, the boyfriend, inside.  Lipton survived, the house was fixed and Aaron spent an adolescence in foster care.

After Veronica died of heart failure at an early age, the house was given to Aaron. His return seemed to set Lipton into a frenzy. As it turned out, Marty Lipton was a serial killer and probable child molester.

Aaron Wiley disappeared and Lipton was captured and accused of more than 10 murders, possibly as many as 30.  Lipton committed suicide before going to trial.

Afterward, the Wiley Estate went into the hands of a curator who cares for the house and sets up a handful of tours of the estate ever year. The tours are very exclusive and there is currently nearly a two year wait for anyone wishing to visit.

The location of Aaron's House / the Wiley House is also a well-kept secret. It stands in an unincorporated area of the Sierra Nevada in northern California. The area was formerly known as Verde Hills, but has no formal title now.

If you are lucky enough to get an invitation to visit the house, visits are done with complete secrecy and under contract where visitors are sworn not to reveal the location or secrets of the property.

The keepers of the house tried to publicize it as a haunted attraction in the early 1990s, but disaster followed, with the house, of course, burning again, and being rebuilt again. Since then, the house, the residents of surrounding communities and all those with an attachment, prefer to keep the house obscure and secret.
